The establishment of a Long-Term Port Policy - "Ports m the Age of Global Exchange" (June 30, 1995)


    The Ministry of Transport made public a new long-term port policy entitled "Ports in the Age of Global Exchange - towards ports which provide advanced networks to the world and vitalize regional communities and economies" on June 30 1995. The national port policy set up basic goals to which port administration of the country should be oriented in response to emerging trends over period up to around the year 2010.
    In the coming new age, multi-layered communications and exchanges of people, goods and information will be taking place among nations, regions and individuals. Such unprecedented exchanges among various cultures will bring us totally new ideas and values. Considering historical impact of "the Age of Great Voyage", about 500 years ago, which brought about the world's transition from the Middle Ages to the Modern Age, it might be said that we have now entered a new are-"the Age of Global Exchange"
    With our society steadily maturing, the only way for this country to continue to develop in "the Age of Global Exchange" is to establish symbiotic relations with both the world and the nature.
    For ports in this island country to function as the basic infrastructure indispensable to international communications and exchanges, the Ministry of Transport has set out two major goals : "the formation of advanced port networks to promote global exchange" and "the creation of vitalized and reliable coastal zones for enriched the lives of the people".
    The ministry of Transport will carry out such programs as the 9th 5-year port development plan towards to the basic directions this long-term port policy established. (fig)
