Improvement of Weather Forecasts and Upgrade of the Computer System for Meteorological Services (COSMETS) (March 1, 1996)

Weather forecasts have been used in various fields. The Diversification of the society and intensification of information have created demands for more detailed meteorological information. In order to meet these demands, JMA has replaced the Computer System for Meteorological Services (COSMETS) in March 1996. This system collects and distributes meterological data information within and outside Japan at higher, speeds and executes more detailed and accurate (Numerical Weather) forecast models with its supercomputers which have a calculation speed 10 times faster than predecessors. Since this replacement, new kinds of weather forecast have been announced, such as the "weather distribution forecast" which provides the forecast of weather at 3-hour intervals for each area with the mesh size of 20 km square and the "time sequence forecast" which gives, the forecast of sequential weather at representative areas or points.
The probability expression has been introduced to a one month forecast.(Fig)
