In 1997, ground, maritime and air traffic accidents left a total of 10,174 people dead or missing. It is important for the Ministry of Transport to take reliable traffic safety measures and continue efforts to secure the safety of each transportation mode (Figure 65).
To cope with various disasters, the Ministry has been comprehensively and systematically promoting the enhancement of predictions for preventing disasters, preventive measures for transportation facilities and means, steps against tsunami tidal waves, flood tide and erosion, and disaster relief projects.
In order to maintain its vitality and achieve sustained development, Japan must make further improvements to safety and convenience, environmental conservation and other basic research and development activities that contribute to the dramatic improvement of transportation services (Figure 66).
In efforts to improve consumers' convenience and safety, the Ministry has been promoting the introduction of electronic data interchange systems, the development of general-purpose electronic tickets using IC (integrated circuit) cards and model systems for assisting disabled persons, the improvement of weather services, and the adoption of advanced information systems for transportation administration.
