1. Present Condition of Goods Transport



@ @ Affected adversely by the fuel crisis and the stagnant business condition which occurred at the second part of fiscal 1973, the volume of goods transport by automobiles in fiscal 1973 was down by 5.6 per cent in transported tonnage to 4,900 million tons and by 8.2 per cent in transported ton-kilometers to 141 000 million ton-kilometers compared with that of the previous fiscal year. Especially, the volume of goods transport by privately owned vehicles plunged sharply.
@ @ The number of lorries in fiscal 1973 increased by 7 per cent both for lorries operated by common carriers and for lorries operated privately and virtually remained unchanged from that of the previous fiscal year. 2.
