The education of mariners are largely classified into the ship's staff
education and the ship's crew education. For education o fship's staff, there
are two mercantile marine universities and five higher mercantile marine schooIs.
Moreover, there is the Institute fbr Sea Training as the means of performing
naviga tion practice training by schooIships against these students. And, ther
are 13 SchooIs for Seamen's Training as training facilities of ship's crews
and they are mainly perfoming training of oceangoing ship's crews.
Moreover in the recent years the technical renovation of vessels in the
Shipping industry of Japan has rapidly progressed and since seamen education
which sufficiently adapts to this is demanded, the consolidation of the seamen
reeducation system and educational equipment parts such as various automation
machineries, etc., are performed at facilities for seamen education under the
jurisdiction of the Ministry of Transportation.
