II-(III) HARBORS

CHAPTER 1. UTILIZATION AND MANAGEMENT OF HARBORS

1. Utilization Condition of Harbors

There exists 1,080'harbors in Japan and as harbor facilities, the quay ton version extension of mooring facilities is 1,162 kilometers, the breakwater extension is 592 kilometers and the anchorage area (anchorage for large vessels) is 1,000 million square meters.
The cargo volume handled at harbors for 1973 is as shown in Table II - (lll) - 1 and the volume of about 2,700 million freight tons shows a sharp increase of 22.2% in comparison to the preceding year.
Moreover, on port entering vessels, it was 9,820,000 vessels (Increase of 1.5% in comparison to that of the preceding year) and the gross tonnage of 3,039,6SO,000 tons (Increase of 17.6% in comparison to that of the preceding year) and although practically a crablike crawl was maintained in the number of vessels, the increase in gross tonnage is remarkable since the use of larger vessels was conspicuous.
