On July 1, 1992, the new terminal area, the second period plan of the
construction of the Shin-Chitose Airport was completed, and began operation.
This new terminal area is broadly comprised of an apron, passenger terminal
area, freight terminal area, etc. The semi-circular passenger terminal, the
first of its kind in Japan, was especially constructed for passengers to enjoy
the various services and facilities such as the plazas, hotels, etc. At the
same time as it opened, the Shin-Chitose Airport Station in the underground
of the terminal building also opened, facilitating access to the airport with
direct JR lines and improvements of interchanges from highways.
Recreated to serve as a base airport in Hokkaido, this new terminal area
is expected to contribute greatly to the development of the area.
