Many people have come to enjoy the pleasures of the sea with the popularity
in recent years of various kinds of marine leisure activities ranging from walks
along the seaside, yachting, marine biking, to cruises on luxurious ships, etc.
This is why the July 20 "Sea Memorial Day" was established in 1941 and saw its
52nd anniversary in 1992, and as it is a public event, was participated in by
many people.
Many various memorial celebrations were carried out on this "Sea Memorial
Day" in 1992. The first Japanese woman who ever succeeded in sailing around
the world without making any stops Miss Noriko Imakire was honored by the Transport
Minister for having contributed greatly to the spread of marine ideology.
