Because methanol fueled vehicles use methanol, a type of alcohol, for
fuel, the exhaust fumes contain almost no black smoke and NOx emission amounts
to only half of that emitted by conventional diesel cars. They are therefore
very promising as environment-friendly and low polluting cars. As their reliability
and safety have been confirmed in test-running in cities, plans were made to
market methanol fueled vehicles for general use such as small 2t cargo trucks,
etc. in the fall of 1992.
Although fuel supply and car prices had posed problems in the use of methanol
fueled vehicles, Itabashi Ward set up a large-scale methanol stand (10 kl) in
June, 1992. As special measures for the introduction of such cars, special tax
measures and a system of subsidizing the lease of three hundred such cars by
the All Japan Truck Association have been set up.
Utilizing these measures, the fully-fledged use of methanol fueled vehicles
as distribution trucks and so on will be the goal in the coming future.
