@ @ Since September 1992, at the request of the Minister of Transport, the
Council for Transport Policy has been examining the taxi industry of Japan with
regard to how it should be guided into the future. This has been carried out
with due consideration to the changing situation relating to the taxi industry,
such as diversified consumer needs and the difficulty of ensuring a labor force.
The recommendations made in June 1992 by the Special Administrative Reform Council
were also taken into account.
@ @ On May ll, the Council for Transport Policy submitted a report which recommended
the following; ensure a good labor force of sufficient size and skill to support
the development of the taxi industry, relax current supply and demand control
operation, and introduce diversified fares in the face of the increasing need
for diversification in service. It is the intention of the Ministry of Transport
to make every effort to implement these measures with utmost consideration to
the recommendations made.
