The Tokaido Shinkansen, which has been playing an important role as the
main artery in Japan since its initiation of operation in 1964, has already
been put under pressure from the standpoint of transportation capacity.
In order to resolve the situation, Central Japan Railway Co., ltd. filed
a request for approval of alteration of the Basic Plan for Business based on
the Railway Enterprise Law in order to establish New Shinagawa Station with
facilities to enable shuttle services and the Minister of Transport approved
the request on March 25, 1996.
The establishment of New Shinagawa Station will make it possible to increase
the number of trains (one way) for operation per hour from the current 11 to
15, which will enlarge the transport capacity of the Tokaido Shinkansen.
The security of the required site and designing of the station building
will be expedited and the construction will be carried on for the opening of
the station in FY2003.
The Ministry of Transport has decided to support the project of the establishment
of New Shinagawa Station as part of the construction for the strengthening of
transport by the Tokaido Shinkansen through the financing system at low interest
rate by the Japan Development Bank.(Fig)
