The Opening of Use of Japan's First 15-meter Depth Container Terminal (April 15, 1996)

In March 1996, the world largest container vessel - "REGlNA MAERSK" entered Kobe and Yokohama Ports. This super large size vessel has an overall length of 318 meters (longer than the Japan's tallest building Yokohama Landmark Tower by 22 meters), a width of 42 meters, a draft of 14 meters, a gross tonnage of 80,000 tons and a loading capacity of 6,000 TEU. It can be said that container vessels the size of which has been increasing, have finally entered the age of the 6,000 TEU class.
With this background, the Japan's first 15-meter depth container terminal consists of 2 berths, which Kobe Port Terminal Corporation had been constructing since 1993, opened on April 15, 1996.
Recently, the enlargement of the size of container vessels aiming to increase transportation efficiency has been remarkable and it was an urgent necessity to install a 15- meter depth, high specification container terminal to strengthen the international competitiveness of Japanese ports.
This container terminal is expected to make a great contribution to the rehabilitation of Kobe Port as well.(Picture)
