"Marine Day" Instituted as New National Holiday (July 20, 1996)


    Since 1941, July 20 was familiar for a long time among various strata of Japanese people as "Marine Day".
    Last year, the National Holidays Law was revised and July 20 was instituted as "Marine Day" to "give thanks for the benefits of the sea and wish for the prosperity of the maritime nation of Japan". This year was the first year the day was celebrated.
    On July 20, a commemorative ceremony was held in Tokyo with the Crown Prince and the Crown Princess in attendance and various splended events for celebration such as the declaration of Marine "Day by Prime Minister Hashimoto were held.
    Many events for celebration were held on that day in various parts of Japan with "Marine Day" as the central theme.
    The Ministry of Transport will endeavour positively to popularize this day with the people for their better understanding of and deepened interest in the relation between their lives and the sea.(Picture)
