Section 3. Smooth International Cargo Distribution to Handle Increasing Imports

@ @Intermodal transportation is developing in international door-to-door transportation. In addition, a growing number of Japanese freighters are setting up footholds in foreign countries. To cope with such situations, the Ministry is promoting overall international inter-modal transportation.
@ @The Ministry is also improving infrastructvres required for import. This is in response to a growing demand for a smoother linkage between the international and domestic distributiQn channels amid pressures to import more and a sharp rise in imports of products and parts (Fig. 31). In addition, 22 areas have been so far designated as Foreign Access Zones (FAZ) and the local import promotion programs for these zones have been approved (Fig. 32). Particulaply in the specified consolidated areas designated by the revised FAZ Law (revision was made last year) within the FAZ, the Ministry will promote consolidation of importrelated businesses so as to facilitate the distribution of imported cargo.
