The port of Ofunato is in the southeast end of Iwate Prefecture facing the North Pacific Ocean. It has a typical ria coastline and is a linear layout, running north to south for 6 km. This is a natural port surrounded by hills, which protect it from wind and waves. The port became to be widely recognized for the battleship Raiden, which entered the port in 1887. The coastline has scenic landscapes like Goishi Kaigan Beach (designated a national park). Ofunato used to be a vibrant port with the aquaculture of oysters and scallops, a route for container ships, a cement-related-business, and visiting passenger ships. However, the port suffered enormous damage from the Great East Japan Earthquake. In order to recover as a place where each of the citizens is proud of, people are currently committed to focusing on industrial development through fisheries, port, and sightseeing initiatives by taking advantage of the capabilities of the port.
