In 1859, Hakodate opened its gates to the world as Japan's first international trade port, along with Yokohama and Nagasaki. It absorbed the cultures of the various countries it exchanged with and developed into the city it is today. Even today, streets with a decidedly foreign feel stretch throughout the city, and there are many charming sights to see. In Michelin Green Guide Japan, an internationally recognized travel guide, the view from Mt. Hakodate received the highest grade of 3 stars. In total, 21 spots throughout the city received stars, making it a city abundant with tourist attractions.
