Yakushima Lighthouse

Yakushima Lighthouse, located near the Seibu Rindo Forest Path in the northwest of the island, was built at the beginning of the nineteenth century. After the First Sino-Japanese War (1894–1895), Taiwan became a Japanese territory and trade rapidly increased between the islands. Yakushima Lighthouse became an important navigational aid for ships coming from the south. Its church-like design was based on a British lighthouse, and it is now a popular location for newly-married couples to take photos. Visitors are encouraged to take a look behind the lighthouse, where they will find a small shrine dedicated to Ebisu, the Japanese god of fishermen.
