蚕のたべもの
蚕は、ほぼ、桑の葉のみを消費する。現代の蚕は完全に家畜化されているため、人によって桑の葉を与えられなければ、衰弱して、死亡する。一頭の蚕は生涯に合計２０～２５グラムの桑の葉を食べるが、そのうち８０パーセントは、幼虫としての最後の発育段階（第５段階）で消費される。繭を作り始める頃には、蚕の大きさは当初の２５倍以上に成長している。
蚕は桑の葉のタンパク質と窒素の栄養を使い、絹の繭を作るための２つのタンパク質、フィブロインとセリシンを生成する。現代の養蚕では、蚕に人工飼料が与えられることもあるが、蚕が好むのは依然、原初からの食料、桑である。
What Silkworms Eat
Silkworms consume almost exclusively mulberry leaves. The modern silkworm is completely domesticated, and if not given mulberry leaves by a human, it will wither and die. In total, each silkworm will eat 20 to 25 grams of mulberry leaves during its life—80 percent of which is during a silkworm’s fifth and final stage of development as a larva. By the time it begins to spin its cocoon, the silkworm grows to over 25 times its original size.
Silkworms use the protein and nitrogen in mulberry leaves to create fibroin and sericin, the two proteins that make up their silk cocoons. In modern sericulture, silkworms are sometimes given artificial feed, but they still favor their original staple, mulberry.
