天満宮神社の眺め
この部屋から男山の丘にある姫路城の向かい側に天満宮神社がはっきりと見ることができる。千姫(1597－1666)の指示で1623年に建てられ、天満宮は神道の神で、学問と知識を後援する天神を祀っている。その神社の建設の前、千姫は城の敷地にあるより小さな神棚で天神を拝んでいたと言われている。そこで本多一族のためと彼女の最初の夫豊臣秀頼(1593－1615)の魂を鎮めるために祈りを捧げていた。
回廊と結ばれている展示には｢羽子板｣つまり飾りの絹で覆われた木製の試合用の櫂である。この羽子板は千姫によって天満宮に寄付されたものと言われている。
View of Tenmangū Shrine
This room affords a clear view of Tenmangū Shrine, which is located across from Himeji Castle on Otokoyama Hill. Built in 1623 on the instructions of Princess Sen (1597–1666), Tenmangū enshrines the Shinto deity Tenjin, patron of scholarship and knowledge. Before the shrine’s construction, Princess Sen is said to have worshipped Tenjin at a smaller shrine on the castle grounds—offering prayers for the Honda clan and to calm the spirit of her first husband, Toyotomi Hideyori (1593–1615).
On display in the connecting gallery is a hagoita—a wooden game paddle—that is said to have been donated to Tenmangū by Princess Sen.
