隠された姫路：排水用瓦
頻繁に豪雨が降る国では、木造建築を乾燥した状態に保ち、腐敗を防ぐ工夫が必要である。これらの瓦は雨水を建物の脇からできるだけ遠くに方向を変えるように設計されている。溝は、先端近くの低い部分に切り込まれ、またそれらの端の部分は尖っていて少し上に突き出ていて、外に向かって飛び出る細い水の流れを生み出している。その設計は古代に韓国から日本に導入されたと考えられている。

Hidden Himeji: Drainage Tiles
In a country with frequent, heavy rainfall, keeping wooden structures dry and safe from rot requires ingenuity. These tiles are designed to divert rainwater as far away from the sides of the building as possible. Grooves are cut into the lower edge near the tip, and the tiles are pointed and protrude slightly, creating narrow jets of water that carry the water away from the walls. The design is thought to have been introduced to Japan from Korea in ancient times.
