らんかん橋
お姫様にぴったりな橋
昔の中山道では、このような小川には、通常この橋のように丸太を束ねただけの簡素な橋がかかっていました。洪水や地滑りで橋が頻繁に流されたことを考慮すると、ここまで質素だったことにも頷くことができますが、かつてここに架かっていた橋には非常に顕著な特徴、欄干が備わっており、これを受けてその周辺地域の地名も「らんかん」と呼ばれるようになりました。
この比較的丈夫な橋は、1731年に京都から江戸の都に長旅を経て輿入れした皇女、比宮のために架けられた橋です。同時代の記録によると、このお姫様の輿入れを受けた三留野宿と野尻間の与川道の改修に5,302名もの地元民が動員されたということです。

A Bridge Fit for a Princess
In the old days of the Nakasendo, a stream such as this would typically be bridged by a simple structure made of logs lashed together. Given the frequency with which bridges were swept away by floods and landslides, this level of simplicity made perfect sense. The bridge that once stood here, however, had railings (rankan), a feature so remarkable that the surrounding area, Rankan, was named for it.
This relatively sturdy bridge was constructed specifically for the crossing by Princess Naminomiya, who made the long journey from Kyoto in 1731 to get married in the capital of Edo. According to contemporaneous records, 5,302 local people were mobilized to make improvements to the Yogawa-michi route between Midonojuku and Nojiri in her honor.
