The Garden of Chishakuin
The garden located immediately behind the Kōdō (the lecture hall and main training hall), is celebrated for its unique beauty and seasonal variation. Modeled on the region around the historic Mt. Lu in central China, the deceptively compact garden is centered on a hill decorated with a medley of flowering bushes and granite stones. The elegant pond that surrounds the hill is known for its distinctive greenish-white color.
Visitors to the garden can view the scene from a slightly elevated veranda outside the tatami room of a teahouse built in the traditional style of the late sixteenth century. The site’s association with the world of tea is highlighted by reports that the garden was particularly loved by the tea master, Sen no Rikyū (1522-1591).
