シマフクロウ
シマフクロウは世界最大のフクロウの一種で、翼開長は1.8メートルに達することもあります。アイヌ先住民族はシマフクロウをコタンコロカムイ（ 「村を守護する神」）と呼びました。
十分に成長した大人の雄の体重は最大3.5キロ、雌は最大4.6キロにもなります。主食は魚です。
森林破壊、ダム建設や河道の直線化のために営巣地や餌場になりうる場所が減ってしまい、絶滅の危機に瀕しています。
絶滅を防ぐために、環境庁は補助的な食料源を取り入れたり、営巣地を与えるために木々に巣箱を設置したり、怪我をして弱ったフクロウにリハビリを施しました。
Blakiston’s Fish Owl
Blakiston’s Fish Owl (shimafukuro; Bubo blakistoni) is one of the world’s largest owls, with a wingspan that can reach over 1.8 meters. The indigenous Ainu people referred to it as kotan kor kamuy, or “god who owns the village.”
A fully grown adult male can weigh up to 3.5 kilograms, while females can weigh up to 4.6 kilograms. Their diet consists mainly of fish.
The owl is endangered due to deforestation, construction of dams, and river-straightening, which reduce potential nesting and feeding sites.
To prevent extinction, the Ministry of the Environment has introduced supplemental food sources, installed nest boxes in trees to provide nesting sites, and rehabilitated weak and injured owls.
