南三陸の水路は、地元の人々の日常生活に不可欠な役割を果たしています。作物に不可欠な用水を供給するのに加え、河川は、特に栄養が豊富な河口部で、多種多様な野生の生き物を養っています。

鋭い観察眼を持つ人は、この地域の河川をめぐりながら、イトトンボ、ゲンジボタル、トウホクサンショウウオ、モクズガニ、ワカサギ、マス、シロザケ、シロウオ、マハゼ、ウグイ、ボラなど、あらゆる種類の生き物を見つけることができるでしょう。
