Ishigami-san

A large rock, popularly called Ishigami-san (literally, honorable deity of the rock), is located inside Shinmei Jinja shrine in Osatsu-cho. This community has the largest population of ama divers in the Toba region. The divers’ work is fraught with danger, and local ama have long prayed to this divine rock for safety and an abundant catch. The deity is celebrated with a festival on May 7 every year. On this day, the divers take a well-deserved break and the men of the village prepare a banquet for them. In recent years, the event has gained popularity among female visitors drawn by a local legend that Ishigami-san will grant them one wish.
