Shirahige Jinja Shrine

This shrine, located just up the cliffs from Shirongo Beach, honors a guardian deity called Shirahige Myojin. The shrine has watched over the island for some 500 years; it is where the first pair of abalone caught during the Shirongo Matsuri festival are presented every year. Island custom dictates that visitors should remove their shoes before proceeding beyond the torii gate and onto the round stones that cover the inner prayer area.
