Tabunoki Trees

The tabunoki (Machilus thunbergii) is the world’s largest species of evergreen bay tree. Tabunoki are found throughout temperate to subtropical coastal areas of Japan, and are often planted as part of the sacred groves surrounding Shinto shrines. Four particularly splendid 15-meter-tall specimens stand just outside the waiting room for the Sakatejima island ferry. They are designated Natural Monuments of Toba.
