Suwa Grand Shrine

Suwa Grand Shrine is one of the most important sacred sites in Kagoshima Prefecture, sentinel of an estimated 1,400 years of history. Legend says that it was created by a family of gods: a father and his two sons. The upper shrine is dedicated to the older brother, while the lower shrine is dedicated to the younger brother. The shrine’s double red torii gates, which sit adjacent to each other, are popular with visitors praying for happiness in marriage.
