Mt. Ebinodake
Mt. Ebinodake is a dormant volcano with a shallow crater 700 meters in diameter. The hiking trail follows the gentle slope up and around the crater’s rim. In just over an hour, hikers pass through both warm-temperate and temperate biomes. The higher the trail goes, the more deciduous trees there are. This difference can be seen simply by looking up at the forest canopy. Mushrooms and other fungi are abundant at every elevation. These include a bioluminescent variety called tsukiyotake, or “moonlight mushroom.”
The main lookout is just under 1,300 meters above sea level. The panoramic view includes Mt. Shiratoriyama to the northwest, then (turning clockwise) Mt. Koshikidake, Mt. Ioyama, and Mt. Karakunidake. On a clear day, Kagoshima Bay, the Sakurajima volcano, and even Mt. Kaimondake are visible in the far distance to the south.
