Kamikatsu Art Project
The Kamikatsu Art Project was begun in 2007 to combine art and nature, and nine outdoor art installations designed by globally renowned artists are scattered throughout the town. The installations use locally sourced wood and other materials and were assembled with the help of over 3,000 community volunteers. One additional artwork was added in 2014. These works surpass mere viewing to offer an immersive art experience. Some examples are described below.
Title: Water Pagoda

Description: This work captures the power of Onbuchi and Menbuchi Falls, while evoking the essence of water as the source of life. It is intended to be a manifestation of a traditional sacred dragon, which was once also considered a water deity.

Description: This work is designed to link memories of the past and hopes for the future. Rows of wooden plaques line the walls, each displaying memories handwritten by community members as messages for younger generations.
Title: Morinoagarihana
Artist: Tsuchiya Kimio, Japan
Location: Ikumi
Year: 2014
Description: This work draws inspiration from the Grizedale Forest in the United Kingdom. The public can walk on it, relax, and take in views of the clear blue river nearby. The work also brings people together as a stage for music, traditional performing arts, and theater.
