Daiyon Hongū
Daiyon Hongū, or “fourth main shrine,” is dedicated to the legendary empress-regent Jingū, who is said to have founded Sumiyoshi Taisha in the early third century. Empress Jingū is enshrined as the goddess Okinagatarashihime no Mikoto and is worshipped alongside the three maritime gods for whom she had Sumiyoshi Taisha built. Her shrine sits off to the side of Daisan Hongū.
The main sanctuary, or honden, of Daiyon Hongū is identical to those of the other three main shrines except for one detail: the crossed ornamental timbers at each end of the roof ridge are cut horizontally rather than vertically. The current honden was built in 1810 and is designated a National Treasure.
