Misumi Port is located at the tip of Uto Peninsula in the center of Kumamoto Prefecture. As the area also faces the Amakusa Oyano Peninsula, it is naturally suited to being a harbor. In addition, since the JR Kyushu Railway Company established the “A Train” between Kumamoto Station and Misumi Station, Misumi Port has welcomed many visitors. As for Misumi West Port, its masonry-stone wharf and waterways have remained unchanged from the time of their construction, and thus the port has become an important and unique national legacy of Japan’s era of industrial modernization. In July 2015, Misumi West Port, along with Miike Coal Mine and Manda Pit in nearby Arao City were officially designated as World Heritage Sites for their roles in helping shape the industrial modernization of Meiji Era Japan and its representative fields of steel and iron manufacturing, shipbuilding, and coal industry.
