This large garden is the shinniwa “new garden,” and was built during the Meiji period (1868–1912). The river which runs through the garden has always been dry and is filled with stones arranged to resemble the flow of a river. Unlike the inner garden opposite the shoin, which was built during the Edo Period (1603-1867), this garden is intended to be walked through. The garden contains a variety of different plants, and the grass was added after World War II.

新庭と呼ばれるこの広い庭園は、明治時代（1868-1912）に建てられた。江戸時代の庭の反対側には書院という形式と異なり視界の開けた回遊式庭園で、 庭を流れる川は、上流には大きな岩が、川幅が広くなるにしたがって岩は小さくなっていく。この様式は川の全体を表している。この庭には多種多様の植物が植えられ、第二次世界大戦後に芝生が追加された。
