Mōtsūji Temple Bell Tower
The style of this bell is similar to one hanging at Byōdōin, a Buddhist temple in Uji, near Kyoto. Both were forged around the same time during the twelfth century.
The bell was designed and cast by the artist Masahiko Katori (1899–1988), who created many of the bells hanging in temples around Japan. He was awarded the title of Living National Treasure for his skill and preservation work. The bell bears the seal of the former head priest of the Tendai school of Buddhism, Yamada Etai (1900–1999).
