Mōtsūji Temple Beach
This peninsula simulates a coastal beach and is one of the features of Mōtsūji’s Pure Land-style garden. Small, round, weather-worn stones form a curved shoreline using the garden technique of placing rocks to simulate elements of a natural landscape. As the shallow waters of the Great Spring Pond (Ōizumi ga Ike) ripple along its southeastern edge, the small stones are hidden and revealed, and the ocean is created in microcosm.
The gently curving beach stands in contrast to the dramatic and angular rocks found in other sections of the Great Spring Pond.
