Tetsujū

Iron trees

Important Cultural Property


These unusual trees crafted of cast iron were made in the Heian period (794–1185) and are believed to be the work of members of Mokusa Kaji, a local group of blacksmiths. The trees were passed down through the generations at Senjuin, one of the sub-temples of Mōtsūji, and are believed to have decorated a room in the residence of the third Fujiwara lord Hidehira (1122?–1187).


鉄樹

これらの珍しい鉄樹は、平安時代（794～1185）に作られ、地元の鍛冶である舞草鍛冶によって鋳造されたと考えられています。 学者によると、それらが毛越寺の子院である千手院の装飾として受け継がれ、奥州藤原氏三代目の秀衡（1122？–1187）の住居の部屋を装飾したと考えられています。
