Statues of Kumano goddess and attendants
Iwate Prefecture Tangible Cultural Property
These twelfth-century wooden statues depict a mother goddess and attendant figures that are associated with the Kumano region in central Japan. Kumano is a spiritual heartland that is home to the three Kumano Sanzan grand Shinto shrines. These are rare examples of images made of Shinto gods, and were originally housed in Kongōin, a subtemple of Mōtsūji.
