Design and building materials


The Old Public Hall is an example of Western architecture from the Meiji era (1868–1912), but it also incorporates Japanese and Chinese motifs. Its builders used materials often seen in Western-style buildings in Japan, as well as local materials that are not often used outside of Hokkaido.


公会堂の意匠と建材

明治の洋風建築である公会堂には西洋建築の意匠（モチーフ）が多数取り入れられています。一方で、和風や中国風のような意匠（モチーフ）も混在しており、洋風建築が数少ない時代に試行錯誤をした当時の職人の努力がしのばれます。

また、公会堂に使用されている建材（マテリアル）も、国内の洋風建築によく用いられるものから、北海道ならではの地域性を表すものまで、さまざまなものが使用されています。
