Yacho no Mori Trail
The 400-meter nature trail starting here winds through the lush forest of Mt. Morappu’s western slope. Yacho no Mori (lit., “wild bird forest”) is home to a variety of birds including great tits, varied tits, eastern crowned warblers, Old World warblers, and gray-headed woodpeckers. Birds are easiest to spot in the morning when they are foraging for food. The hut near the trailhead looks out onto a small pond where birds gather to drink.
Wildflowers flourish in Yacho no Mori throughout the warm seasons. In spring, they include pheasant’s eye and Japanese wood poppy. In summer, heal-all, snakeberry, and jack-in-the-pulpit. In autumn, monkshood, goldenrod, and hairy agrimony.
Lake Shikotsu, Japan's second-largest caldera lake, is visible on parts of the trail through the dense surrounding forest.
