Miyajima Tsutsumigaura Nature Park
Tsutsumigaura Nature Park is located on the northeastern side of Miyajima Island, one of the large islands in Hiroshima Bay, away from the urbanized area near the Miyajima ferry terminal. The park’s remoteness from the island’s residential center means visitors are surrounded by the undisturbed environment of Miyajima. Tsutsumigaura Nature Park is accessible from the pier by bus, or via a shuttle operated by park staff.
Tents and hammocks can be rented at the park campground. There are also 16 private cabins for up to four people, complete with their own bathroom and kitchen areas. The park’s larger group cabins, with dormitory-style bunk beds and shared living areas, are ideal for solo travelers who prefer not to camp.
On-site restaurant Hoshino Shizuku serves local seafood and Hiroshima Prefecture specialties. For something more hands-on, the Maruaki Suisan oyster hut offers visitors the chance to cook their own locally sourced oysters while looking out over the Seto Inland Sea. Portable barbecues are also available to rent for a picnic in the park (the office sells grill-ready platters).
The park includes the 200-meter-long Tsutsumigaura Beach, where the shallow waters of the bay are ideal for swimming. Fishing equipment can be rented from the park, and real enthusiasts can even hire a boat. Those looking for landscapes rather than lunch can hire a cruiser and circle the island. The park also features a sports field and a full-size tennis court.
Hikers will find the head of the Tsutsumigaura Nature Trail at the western edge of the park. The 3.2-kilometer walking route leads through secluded forest and ends at the maple-tree-filled Momijidani Park. Miyajima’s native deer, who are friendly and accustomed to humans, make regular appearances on the trail and around Tsutsumigaura Nature Park itself.
