Hatto (Lecture Hall)
The Hatto (Lecture Hall) is 20 meters tall, making it the largest hall at Kenchoji Temple and the largest wooden structure in the Kanto region.
It was originally used by Kenchoji’s abbot to deliver sermons to the temple’s monks and priests. The raised platform at the back of the room was not used for a deity or statue at that time; instead, the abbot would stand on it to address the assembled audience.
Today, the Hatto is no longer used for sermons, but the building does host public ceremonies and special events including concerts and art shows. The statue behind the platform is a Thousand-Armed Kannon.
The Hatto was rebuilt in 1814 and is designated an Important Cultural Property.
