Nigorigo Onsen Municipal Open-Air Bath
Nigorigo Onsen Municipal Open-Air Bath is a rustic garden hot spring in the foothills of Mt. Ontake. Boulders around the bath accent the riverside setting, and the conifers, maples, bamboo grass, and other plantings in the garden blend with the surrounding vegetation.
Nigorigo Onsen was developed as a hot springs area in the late nineteenth century. Nigori (lit., cloudy) alludes to the turbid appearance of the hot spring water that is a result of the iron, calcium monosulfate, sodium, and magnesium it contains. Bathing there is believed to soothe a number of physical ailments, including dry skin and poor blood circulation.
