自籠岩（じごもりいわ）
南祖坊が十和田湖の守り神を脅かす八頭の大蛇と戦うため、修行に使ったと言われる岩です。言い伝えでは、神々が大蛇と戦う南祖坊に話しかけたのもこの場所であったとされています。龍神と化した南祖坊は暴虐な大蛇を相手に勝利を収め、以後、自籠岩は占場、十和田神社とともに神聖な場所とみなされるようになりました。
道標もない山道を30分以上歩くと自籠岩に至ります。金属製の梯子や岩を伝って頂上まで登ると、十和田湖の壮大な景色が目前に広がります。
ご注意：自籠岩へは経験豊かなガイドの付き添いが必須です。初心者の方にはお勧めいたしません。
Jigomori Rock
This rock is said to be where Nonsonobo came to meditate during the battle with the eight-headed serpent that was threatening the goddess of Lake Towada. Legend has it the gods spoke to him from here during the battle. Nansonobo become a dragon god himself and claimed victory over the monstrous serpent, which is why this outcrop is considered as sacred as the Uranai-ba and the Towada Shrine.
To reach Jigomori Rock you will need to follow an unmarked mountain trail for over 30 minutes. Once there, you will find a series of metal ladders and rocks to climb to the summit, which offers spectacular panoramic views of Lake Towada.
Note: You are only allowed to visit this location with an experienced guide. This route is not recommended for beginners.
