玉藻池を中心とする日本庭園は規模が小さく、新宿御苑の中ではよく見過ごされてしまう場所ですが、実際のところは、まるで宝石のようにとても貴重な庭園です。このエリアはもともと、将軍の重要な家臣であった内藤清成（1555～1608）という大名の庭園の一部であり、典型的な日本庭園の特徴が凝縮された場所です。大木戸休憩所からは庭園のすばらしい眺めを一望でき、庭園を散策すれば、新たな視点から景色を楽しむことができます。玉藻池は深い森に囲まれており、その中にはたいへん珍しい桜の木も含まれています。この池はもともと1700年代に作られたもので、玉川上水（上水道）の余水を利用していました。今日、この歴史的な庭園で玉藻池やそこに浮かぶ小島を眺めると、自然を愛でる心や平穏さははるか何世紀も前からきわめて重要視されていたことに気づかされます。

Tamamo Pond is a small, often overlooked jewel within Shinjuku Gyoen. This area is a part of a much larger Japanese garden originally owned by Naito Kiyonari (1555–1608), an important vassal of the shogun. The garden is a microcosm of all the most typical features of a Japanese garden. The Okido Rest House offers a wonderful view over the gardens, and walking around the garden reveals new vistas to be enjoyed. The pond is surrounded by deep forest, which includes a very rare sakura cherry tree. The pond was originally created in the 1700s and used surplus water from the Tamagawa Aquaduct. Looking at the lake with its tiny island today, this historic garden reminds us of the love of nature and the peacefulness that was prized so highly centuries ago.
