散策マップ② 高森殿の杉
南阿蘇ビジターセンターが提供している2つ目の散策ルートは、２本の古代の神話に包まれた巨大な杉の木がある高森町の森林を通ります。高森は、熊本県の東側にあり、阿蘇カルデラの南側に位置する人口6,000人くらいの町です。高森からは、阿蘇山の5つの峰のひとつである根子岳（その他は高岳、中岳、杵島岳、烏帽子岳）の美しい景色を眺めることができます。
高森どんの杉という、幹の直径が10m以上で樹齢400年以上の2つの有名な杉の木が、カルデラの南端に向かうルートの途中に生えています。この2本の杉を、一本が男性、もう一本が女性と見立てると、あたかもお互いに手を伸ばしあっているように見えます。16世紀の大名、高森惟直と彼の家臣が、1586年の阿蘇の戦いで敗北して切腹した後、この木々の根本に葬られたといわれています。この場所は現在、結婚の幸運を祈るために人々が訪れるパワースポットとして知られています。この散策ルートを進めば、緑豊かな森に囲まれた多くの古い神社を見ることができます。
Walking Trails - The Trail to the Cedars of Takamori
The second hiking trail from the Minami Aso Visitor Center passes through the forests of Takamori, home to two giant cedars shrouded in an ancient myth. Takamori, a small town of about 6,000 people, is located in the eastern part of Kumamoto Prefecture, nestling on the southern side of the caldera rim. It has a beautiful view of Nekodake, one of the five peaks of Mt. Aso (the others being Mt. Takadake, Mt. Nakadake, Mt. Kishima, and Mt. Eboshi).
Takamori-don no Sugi, two famous cedar trees with trunk diameters of more than 10 m, and more than 400 years old, are located on the way up to the southern rim of the caldera, near the Kyushu Nature Trail. It is thought that the trees, one male and one female, seem to be reaching out to one another with their entwined branches. They are associated with the sixteenth century feudal Lord Takamori Korenao and one of his vassals. Following defeat at the Battle of Aso in 1586, they committed ritual suicide and are said to be buried under the cedars. The site is now known as a power spot that people visit to pray for good fortune in marriage. Visitors will also find a number of old shrines surrounded by lush forest along the route.
