沢水草原の保全
くじゅう連山は東西15km以上広がる5つの火山群のことを指します。山地の麓には、草原や広大な自然の湧き地が特徴的な久住高原が広がっており、その中に沢水というエリアがあります。草原にはキャンプ場があり、その地域では豊かな自然を楽しむことができます。
沢水キャンプ場の魅力は、湧き出る豊かな水と、涼しい森、それに目の前に広がる草原です。この草原は、野焼きという手法で、新しい草がよく生えるように、枯れ草を焼くことで維持されています。久住高原の野焼きは、早春、地元の牧場の人々によって行われます。また、野焼きする必要のない地域に火災が広がるのを防ぐために、野焼きする場所の周囲に草の刈り込みを行います。広い草原を維持することは、牧場の人々にとって大切で、とても大変な仕事です。

Somi Grasslands Managed Burning
The Kuju Mountain Range refers to a group of five volcanoes that stretch 15km from east to west. At the base of the mountain range is Somi, an area of the Kuju Plateau characterized by open grasslands and an abundance of natural springs. The grasslands have a campground where visitors can stay and enjoy this wonderful natural environment.
The charm of the Somi campground lies in its clear water springs, cool forests, and the broad grassland that spreads as far as the eye can see. The grassland is managed through controlled burnings called noyaki that allow new grass to grow once the old, dead grass growth has been cleared. Noyaki in Kuju is done mainly by local farmers in the spring. In order to prevent the fires from spreading to areas that do not need to be burnt, firebreaks have to be opened in the grasslands first. Maintaining the broad, beautiful grasslands, though very hard work, is vital for the local farmers.
