毘沙門天像
毘沙門天は、鎧を身につけた姿で、仏法を護持し悪人や侵入者を退散させる存在として表現される。東西南北4つの方角を守護する四天王の一人であり、毘沙門天は北の方角を司っている。高さ123cmのヒノキの一材のこの像は、1078年に国家の安穏、万民の豊楽、寺門の繁栄を祈る法会の本尊として、吉祥天と共に制作された。毘沙門天が右手に小さなストゥーパ（宝塔）を持っている。また、衣服と鎧の細部の表現にも注目されたい。ここには平安時代（794～1185年）の美意識が表現されている。この像は幸運の女神である吉祥天とペアになっている。
Bishamonten Statue
The Buddhist god of war, Bishamonten, is often depicted in Japan heavily clad in armor as the protector of Buddhism and the state. He is one of the four celestial protectors who watch over the four points of the compass, with Bishamonten guarding the north. This 123-centimeter statue was carved in 1078 from a single block of Japanese cypress. Note the fine details in the clothing and armor, embodying the aesthetics of the late Heian period (794–1185). The statue is paired with Kichijoten, the goddess of good fortune.
