不空羂索観音像

この観音像は8本の腕を持っていることが特徴である。8本の腕が、すべてを受け入れる慈悲の神としてのイメージをさらに強調している。一番前の一対の腕は通常の大きさだが、他の6本は小さいスケールとなっている。8世紀につくられ、もともとは彩色がほどこされていたこの像は、カヤの一木から精巧に彫り出されている。衣のひだの表現も写実的である。シンプルな服装と最小限の持物で、観音菩薩の慈愛に満ちた姿勢を効果的に伝えている。

This representation of Kannon is remarkable for its eight arms, which reinforce Kannon’s image as an all-embracing deity of compassion. Created in the eighth century and originally painted, the statue is meticulously carved from a single block of Japanese nutmeg wood. Its simple, realistically carved attire and minimal accouterments effectively convey the benevolence of this bodhisattva.
