藁草履
大仏の右側にある回り廊下の壁には、伝統的な技法でつくられたわらじが一足かけられています。しかし、その大きさは、長さ1.8メートル、幅0.8メートルと、巨大です。重さも45キログラムあります。この大わらじが高徳院に初めて奉納されたのは1951年のことで、当時は日本はまだ太平洋戦争の敗戦からの復興のさなかでした。これを奉納したのは茨城県常陸太田市の中野町の松栄子供会です。「大仏様が日本全国を行脚して、すべての人々の幸せのために働いてくれますように」というのが子ども達のメッセージでした。1956年からは、この子供会から3年ごとに新しいわらじが高徳院に奉納されるようになり、それが続いています。
Giant Straw Sandals
A gigantic pair of traditional straw sandals hang on the wall of the corridor to the right of the Great Buddha. The sandals are 1.8 meters long, 0.9 meters wide, and each weighs 45 kilograms. Sandals of this kind were first presented to Kotokuin Temple in 1951 by the Children’s Association of Matsuzaka-cho in Hitachi Ota City, Ibaraki Prefecture. At the time, Japan was still recovering from World War II. The message sent by the children to accompany the sandals was this: “We pray that the Daibutsu will walk throughout Japan, working for the happiness of everyone.” Every three years since 1956, the same children’s group has made a new pair of giant straw sandals and presented them to Kotokuin.
