大仏の名声と素晴らしさが奥の歴史的資料、旅行日記や演劇に述べられたり、描写されるに至りました。いくつかは13世紀半における大仏の建造を理解するのに役立つ公的記録であり、画像が一時残されていた大広間の自然災害による破壊とそれに続く像自身の修復についての構成の説明でありもしました。大仏とその周辺を描いた江戸時代(160-1867)に書かれた大変著名な紀行文もまた存在します。

The Great Buddha in Historical Texts
The Great Buddha is mentioned in many historical texts, including plays and travel accounts from the Edo period (1603–1868). Some of these texts are public records that can help us to reconstruct how the statue was made in the mid-thirteenth century, while later accounts describe the repeated destruction of the large hall that once housed the image and the eventual restoration of the statue itself.
